The leader of selling Bitcoins for dollars, the company Bitstamp that operates under the jurisdiction of Slovakia and the EU legislation, has informed Russian users that Russian law enforcement bodies had banned the website.
Note that the exchange was not notified or informed about any offences against the law related to its activity. Moreover, there is no one legal claim or complaint from Russian users.
The record of domain ‘bitstamp.net’ is available in the Unified register of banned resources of the Russian Federation. Bitstamp was included in the register due to unknown decision of the unknown court dated by November 11 of the past year. However, the record does not restrict access to this Internet-resource.
The website management found out that the exchanger has broken the law (it is not clear, in accordance with what law) only today and closed access to the exchanger’s services for all Russian users. It is curious that the Register does not provide reasons for banning bitstamp.net. Of course, there were requests sent to the Federal Supervision Agency for Information Technologies and Communications; however, till now there was no answer. Besides, Bitstamp’s competitors operating in cryptocurrency markets continue their activity in Russia with no sanctions imposed.
There are suggestions that the website was banned because of a new law-in-draft introduced by State Duma in December last year intending to administer punishment for operations with cryptocurrencies, but a law-in-draft is not a law yet, that is why the exchanger’s management is confused and going to reveal reasons of such close attention to the website.
The question of unblocking the exchange is still open. We’ll follow the updates.
